What Junk Removal Companies Can't Take — And Where to Take It Instead

Hazardous materials, chemicals, asbestos — what's off limits and the right way to dispose of it.

6 min read

Federal and state regulations prohibit junk removal companies from hauling certain hazardous materials. Knowing what's off limits — and where to take it — saves you time and frustration on removal day.

Hazardous chemicals (paint thinner, pesticides, pool chemicals, solvents): take these to your local Household Hazardous Waste collection center. Most counties offer free drop-off days quarterly.

Asbestos: requires a licensed abatement contractor. Never handle asbestos yourself. If your home was built before 1980, assume ceiling tiles, floor tiles, insulation, and pipe wrap may contain asbestos until tested.

Wet paint and lacquers can't be hauled, but dried/solidified paint cans are fine. To dry out latex paint, add kitty litter, stir, and let it harden in the can. Then we can take it.

Full propane tanks are off limits, but empty ones are fine. Many hardware stores accept empties for exchange. Medical waste, ammunition, and compressed gas cylinders require specialized disposal — contact your local waste authority.

For everything else — furniture, appliances, electronics, construction debris, yard waste, tires, mattresses, exercise equipment, hot tubs, pianos, and thousands of other items — we've got you covered.
